io9's Mission Isn't Over

Hello, I’m Rob Bricken. Some of you may know me as the guy who writes the FAQs, or the guy who hates everything, or a deluded SJW, or perhaps the person who will shortly be turning io9 into a garbage fire. I would like to present myself as something else—the new editor of io9.

Yes, I have been given the monumental, terrifying task of taking over here, a job that I can promise you I did not have designs on. Like all of you, I would have been content with Charlie Jane Anders running io9 until the heat death of the universe. As I told her as she said goodbye, she is io9. Always was. Always will be.

But as Charlie Jane herself wrote, io9 has a mission. If I can get immediately into Star Trek-esque metaphors, when one captain steps down and a new one is appointed—like some sort of “next generation,” if you will—that mission doesn’t change. I’m not here to turn this site into the Rob Bricken show; I’m here to keep io9 doing what it’s always done—be a place where we celebrate the best science fiction, fantasy, and all the wonders that this nerd entertainment renaissance has brought, where we continue to hope for an even better future, and where we fight to make sure science fiction not only is for everybody, but stays for everybody.

I believe—and this is what I remind myself in the dark of night, when I wake up in a cold sweat at the task before me—that io9 can survive Charlie Jane because of Charlie Jane herself. What she and Annalee Newitz built, they built to last. io9 wasn’t just left to me, but to an amazing team CJ created—people who are talented and brilliant and funny and who care about this site, just as I as do. And she left it to you guys as well.

It’s still not an easy job. But it’s the one we’ve all been charged with, and one that I will do my damnedest to fulfill. Our captain has stepped down, but the mission remains. So let’s get to work.

Rob Bricken was the Editor of io9 from 2016-18, the creator of the poorly named but fan-favorite news site Topless Robot, and now writes nerd stuff for many places, because it's all he's good at.
