Is The CW expanding their DC-centric universe with another superhero show? SpoilerTV seems to think so, reporting that a Hawkgirl show is in early development at the network.
The CW has been steadily expanding their own DC franchise universe, with Arrow and The Flash performing extremely well. Next year the channel will debut, Legends of Tomorrow, pulling in characters used in each show. Earlier this year, actress Ciara Renée was cast as Kendra Saunders, aka Hawkgirl. Now, it seems as though the CW is planning to branch Renée off into her own vehicle.
The reincarnation of Egyptian princess Chay-Ara, Hawkgirl is armed with a belt made of Nth metal, allowing her to fly, granting her superhuman strength, vision and healing. Renée portrayed the character briefly during the this season’s finale of The Flash.
It will be interesting to see how The CW proceeds with their comic book franchise: already, they’ve created a durable universe with the ability to share characters and cross them over frequently, while maintaining their own, individual look and feel. Later this year, CBS will debut Supergirl, another DC heroine, and while the producers haven’t ruled out linking the shows, it would make sense for them to create their own female-centric show to add to the universe.
