For the next io9 book club meeting, on 6/21, we will be discussing Cherie Priest's Boneshaker, nominated for both Hugo and Nebula Awards this year. Warren Ellis called this zombie airship adventure his "favourite 'steampunky' novel."

Here's how the io9 book club works:

Every month, the io9 book club meets to discuss a book we've read, often with the author joining in too. This month we're reading Boneshaker. Your task, if you choose to accept it, is to read Boneshaker by Monday, June 21. On that day, we'll post that the book club is in session and you can start discussing the book in comments. The book club stays in session for about 4 days. Usually the author will stop by to answer your questions later in the week, and we're hoping Cherie Priest will have time to do it in June!

And here's the official back-cover description of Boneshaker:

In the early days of the Civil War, rumors of gold in the frozen Klondike brought hordes of newcomers to the Pacific Northwest. Anxious to compete, Russian prospectors commissioned inventor Leviticus Blue to create a great machine that could mine through Alaska's ice. Thus was Dr. Blue's Incredible Bone-Shaking Drill Engine born.

But on its first test run the Boneshaker went terribly awry, destroying several blocks of downtown Seattle and unearthing a subterranean vein of blight gas that turned anyone who breathed it into the living dead.

Now it is sixteen years later, and a wall has been built to enclose the devastated and toxic city. Just beyond it lives Blue's widow, Briar Wilkes. Life is hard with a ruined reputation and a teenaged boy to support, but she and Ezekiel are managing. Until Ezekiel undertakes a secret crusade to rewrite history.

His quest will take him under the wall and into a city teeming with ravenous undead, air pirates, criminal overlords, and heavily armed refugees. And only Briar can bring him out alive.

You can get Boneshaker at your local bookseller, or order it from Macmillan right here.
