In Memoriam Memoriam

In ages past, a monolith displayed
The record of a battle. New-crowned kings
Their chosen works through stone relayed,
And history, clad in marble, ever sings.
But not so now. For history’s bereft
Of permanence, now that we choose to write
Our records in bright pixels. Where’s the heft,
The weight, the grandeur of small lights?
And once those words are fully digitized,
They can be changed with just a few commands.
No chisel needed—one might be surprised
To see the changes made upon demand.
And so we leave this icon on the screen:
A monument to history soon unseen.
