The Avengers' roster has been home to many badass female characters over the years, but never before have a team of all-female heroes been assembled under the Avengers banner. That's changing in the near future though: Meet the A-Force.
Announced on The View today — a seemingly absurd place for Marvel to announce big comics news, but it's also where they revealed that the mantle of Thor would be taken up by a woman — the events of the big multiversal reboot Secret Wars will see every current Avengers team disband, and in their place a legion of women will band together as the new Avengers. The team will feature a variety of fan favorite superheroines from across the Marvel multiverse, from She-Hulk to Captain Marvel to Medusa and Nico Minoru, as well as a newly created character, who will be a cosmic-based heroine called Singularity.
Dazzler! Spider-Gwen! Wasp! Hellcat! Jubilee! Oh my.
It's not just on the page that the new Avengers will have some female empowerment. The creative team is equally female-friendly — the series will be written by G. Willow Wilson (the current writer on Ms. Marvel) and Marguerite Bennett (Angela: Asgard's Assassin), and X-Men artist Jorge Molina will provide art for the series. Here's what Wilson had to say about the Avengers' new team:
We've purposefully assembled a team composed of very different characters — from disparate parts of the Marvel U, with very different power sets, identities and ideologies. They'll all have to come together to answer some big questions: What would you sacrifice to succeed? What is being a hero worth?
Sounds exciting! Let's hope the A-Force sticks around amid all the rebooting going on with Marvel comics in the near future.
