In comics this week, Animal Man bleeds out his eyes and Superman goes grassroots

What's in comic stores this Wednesday? Grant Morrison's "Bruce Springsteen Superman," the return of scifi man of mystery Casanova Quinn, and Animal Man crying tears of hemoglobin. Gross!

First Issues

Okay, so we're in the second week of DC's big superhero relaunch. Frankly, this week's batch has the bulk of the promising debuts.

The ones we're most looking forward to are Grant Morrison's Action Comics (interview about that here), Jeff Lemire's Animal Man (that's Buddy Baker above, looking worse for wear), Gail Simone's Batgirl, Scott Snyder's Swamp Thing (interview here), Paul Cornell's Stormwatch, and Dan DiDio and Keith Giffen's Jack-Kirby-inspired throwback O.M.A.C. (here's io9 exclusive art from that book).

Other DC first issues coming out this week include Batwing, Green Arrow, Detective Comics, Men of War, Static Shock, Hawk & Dove, and Justice League International.

Besides the new DC slew, two groovy espionage releases are Matt Fraction and Gabriel Bá's Casanova: Avaritia and Brian Clevinger and Scott Wegener's Atomic Robo And The Ghost Of Station X. The former is about a dimension-hopping secret agent who's pressganged into fighting for angels; the latter is a pulpy romp about Nikola Tesla's super-spy AI.

Other releases include the IDW miniseries True Blood: French Quarter and that odd 9/11 "truther" comic by Swamp Thing's Rick Veitch.

Grab Bag

There are new issues of Irredeemable, The Boys, Morning Glories, Punisher, I Zombie, and Sweet Tooth.

Graphic Novels

One of the more interesting graphic novels this week is a biocomic of Nobel-prize-winning quantum physicist Richard Feynman. Jim Ottaviani and Leland Myrick's Feynman details the scientist's personal life and delves into his participation on the Manhattan Project and Challenger spacecraft. There's also the second volume of I Zombie, the first volume of Transformers Classics, and Missionary Man: Bad Moon Rising (which has Frank Quitely drawing 2000 AD's Cursed Earth).

As usual, here's the list of everything being released to comic stores tomorrow, and you can find your nearest comic retailer here. Rock over Negative Zone, rock on Tamaran! Warrior's Bar — the owner's a douchebag!
