Not only is Iain M. Banks very generous with his time, he's also the author that British fans most want to see on the big screen.


The Register posted the poll we mentioned a while back, of books that deserve their own movie adaptations, and five out of 50 choices are Banks novels. And Banks' Use of Weapons is winning the poll in a landslide, with only Larry Niven and Larry Pournelle's The Mote in God's Eye even coming close. Are you paying attention, Hollywood? Could someone give me an idea of where to start (again) with the Culture series?

I tried Consider Phlebas, and while I liked the writing and some of the ideas, I really disliked the book itself. It felt far too episodic, and I felt like I was reading a bad serial after a while (Raiding a temple! Oh, but now a huge ship! Oh, but now in a bizarre twist a fat cannibal on an island!)...
