We're a little worried about the Jem and the Holograms movie, and the film's very young cast doesn't alleviate our fears. With filming just days away, we now know who will be playing four members the outrageous eponymous band.
The Jem team released this poster along with the Holograms roster. Aubrey Peeples is playing lead singer Jem (a.k.a. Jerrica), with Stefanie Scott as Jem's sister and Holograms keyboardist Kimber, Aurora Perrineau as Shana, and Hayley Kiyoko as Aja. No word on drummer Raya or the Misfits.
The good news is that there is some legitimate singing talent in the cast. Aubrey Peeples may have been in Sharknado, but she's also in Nashville as the runner-up in a singing competition—and she really can sing:
Plus, Hayley Kiyoko is a singer-songwriter and played a musician in Disney's Lemonade Mouth. But the cast is also very young and they haven't proven the type of stage presence that Jem and the Holograms demands. Jem is all about going big: big colors, big performances, big hair. We were hoping that a Jem movie would be filled with '80s camp, but instead it's looking like a rushed nostalgia grab. Even the poster is hasty; Jem's eye makeup is off in a way that looks sorrowful rather than celebratory.
Add all of this to the fact that Jem creator Christy Marx was never consulted on the film and our girl-power movie has an all-male development team and we're worried that Jem and the Holograms will be flat dolls rather than day-glo rockers.
