It's been nearly a quarter century, and the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are still going strong. But what if they had a darker, more edgy reboot? Here's some fan art from concept artist Eddie del Rio (Godzilla) that imagines what that would look like.
We've featured del Rio's work on Godzilla before, and he's currently working on the King Kong movie Skull Island. He explains the above artwork is his attempt at "taking away some of the campyness of the show" and giving it a slightly "more serious look."
Del Rio explains what you're seeing here: a "creature is on the warpath and all the Zords come together to make the mighty Megazord." He says he's a huge fan of Tokusatsu hero shows from Japan, including "Ultraman, kamen Rider, and Super Sentai to name a few." He's especially gotten more obsessed with watching them in the past couple years.
They are pretty awesome. I can tell the people involved in the Japanese version of the show know that it's silly, [because] they will often play up this silliness. I wanted to do a version for my son who is way into Power Rangers now.
