The David Gemmell Awards were established and first awarded in 2009 to honor the late David Gemmell by recognizing exemplary fantasy novels. Now in its seventh year, the three awards have honored some of the best recent fantasy novels.

Here’s the winners:

  • Ravenhart Award: (Best cover art) Sam Green for Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson
  • Morningstar Award: (Best debut) The Emperor’s Blades by Brian Stavely
  • Legend Award: (Best novel) Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson

Emperor’s Blades is a stellar, stellar debut. Really compelling characters and worldbuilding. I enjoyed the sequel as well, though not quite as much. I’m looking forward to the 3rd.
