Warner Bros. announced that the next DC animated movie would be an adaptation of Gotham by Gaslight, the classic Victorian alt-reality tale drawn by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. Now, we’re getting a preview of what that film will look like.

The eight-minute first look comes as a special feature on the Batman and Harley Quinn movie and has interviews with various creators from DC/WB animation. Creative director Mike Carlin promises there will still be surprises for those who’ve read the original Gotham by Gaslight comic and its sequel Batman: Master of the Future. In the clip, you’ll get glimpses of 19th-Century versions of Harvey Dent, James Gordon and Selina Kyle, along with a trio of young street urchin lads with very familiar names.

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight is due out next year.

Oh look, an announcement about a Batman movie that isn’t connected to other Batman movies. I wonder how many people will freak out about this? Oh wait, no one cares because the animated franchise is allowed to experiment and do whatever they want, but the live action franchise has to follow the Marvel blueprint or it’s failing.
