Hellboy + Tequila + Aztec Vampires = One Helluva Miércoles

What do you get when you dump Hellboy in 1950s Mexico, team him up with three vampire-fighting luchadores, and douse this gang in tequila? You get Hellboy in Mexico (Or, a Drunken Blur), a comic ready-made for Cinco de Mayo.

In this one-shot by Mike Mignola (story) and Richard Corben (pencils), Hellboy travels to Mexico to battle unfathomable evil with the help of three taciturn Mexican wrestlers. This story was referenced in The Hellboy Companion and gets a full tale in this standalone. I love it when Mignola places Hellboy - the perpetually befuddled everyman - in supernatural hotspots around the globe. Remember that story in which he fought all those Japanese heads? But I digress - this is MY PICK OF THE WEEK, hands down.

Other titles of note include...

- I Zombie 1 (DC/Vertigo): A $1 zombie-detective tale with Mike Allred art is pretty hard to beat. For those of you missing Dead Girl from X-Statix, this is in your wheelhouse.

- Buffy The Vampire Slayer 35 (Dark Horse): Twilight has been revealed, and Buffy's gang are knee-deep in demons. If you have any questions for scribe Brad Meltzer, you can ask him at tomorrow's Twitter Q&A.

- Batman And Robin 12 (DC): It's Grant Morrison penning Deathstroke mind-controlling Damian Wayne versus Dick Grayson and Oberon Sexton. Yup.

- Alias 1 (Marvel, $1 reprint): I loved Alias and really wish Marvel would resurrect titles like this for their MAX line. I turn into a sentimental sap when I see that panel of a pre-New Avengers Luke Cage doing Jessica Jones from behind.

- Boys 42 (Dynamite): The best story arc on this title continues with Mother's Milk and Hughie locked on a collision course with Butcher.

- Brightest Day 1 (DC): The 12 heroes and villains from Blackest Night are back from the dead, but what does this mean for the living of DC Universe?

- Astonishing Spider-Man/Wolverine 1 (Marvel): Jason Aaron + the most marketable duo in Marvel history (outside of Bi-Beast, natch) = why hasn't anyone thought of this sooner?

- Spider-Man Fever 2 (Marvel): After a phantasmagorically weird-ass debut, Brendan McCarthy's Spidey-and-Strange tale trundles on.

- Superman War Of The Supermen 1 (DC): After the Free Comic Book Day intro issue, the Big Superman event of 2010 kicks off here. Zod and scads of miffed Kryptonians versus the planet Earth!

As for compilations, we have Walking Dead Book 5 (Image; Kirkman's decompressed zombie stalwart works better in trades, methinks); Dong Xoai Vietnam 1965 (DC; a non-fiction hardcover from the legendary Joe Kubert); Krazy And Ignatz 1916-1918 (Fantagraphics; the classic cat-and-mouse series gets the paperback treatment); and Doctor Who Classics Omnibus Vol 1 (IDW; contributions from Grant Morrison and Dave Gibbons + a talking penguin = fun times).

As usual, you can find a list of this week's releases here and the location of your friendly neighborhood comic shop here. Happy reading, gang!
