If you're in San Francisco this Saturday night, you should stop by Writers In Drag, a reading I'm organizing at the Make Out Room. Readings will include speculative fiction author Nalo Hopkinson, io9 contributor Austin Grossman (Soon I Will Be Invincible), a new cyberpunk story by Michelle Tea (Valencia)... and io9 editor Annalee Newitz's foray into writing a science fiction novel. Details below. Writers In Drag is part of the Writers With Drinks reading series, which I've been organizing since 2002, with some help from Annalee and others. Every now and then we do a "Writers In Drag" event, which doesn't mean Austin Grossman will be in a dress — it means the writers are reading stuff they've written outside their usual genres. Last time around, Kim Stanley Robinson read some of his poetry and Michael Blumlein read nature writing. This time, Austin is reading post-apocalyptic fiction, Annalee is reading science fiction as opposed to science fact, and Michelle Tea is reading the aforementioned cyberpunk tale. Also reading are Stephen Elliott and Jaime Cortez. It's at the Make Out Room, 3225 22nd. street, not far from the 24th street BART station. The show starts at 7:30 sharp, but people often get there before 7:00 to try and snag a seat. And it's just $5 cover charge, or $3 if you're broke.
