Hawkgirl Is Joining The Arrow/Flash Spinoff

If it wasn't obvious already that the CW's new spinoff of the Arrow and Flash universe was an attempt to create a Justice League for TV, it is now. The show has revealed the first of three DC heroes joining the roster alongside Sara Lance, Ray Palmer and Martin Stein: Kendra Saunders, better known as Hawkgirl!

Ciara Renée, who is a relative newcomer, will play the role of Kendra Saunders in the show. Here's how Deadline is describing the character, and how she'll become the mace-swinging hero known as Hawkgirl:

In the new series, Saunders is a young woman who is just beginning to learn that she has been repeatedly reincarnated over the centuries. When provoked, her ancient warrior persona manifests itself, along with wings that grow out of her back, earning her the moniker Hawkgirl.

It certainly sounds like an intriguing way to work in how Kendra became the hero in the comics — originally Kendra died after committing suicide, and the soul of the original Golden Age Hawkgirl Shiera Hall entered her body, turning her into the winged superhero.

The news is interesting considering that the three roles being cast were supposedly meant to be for DC heroes who had "never" been seen on TV — whereas Hawkgirl is no stranger to DC television shows, thanks to multiple appearances in the DC animated universe as well as a live-action adaptation in the ninth season of Smallville, where she was played by Sahar Biniaz. This is technically still true, in a roundabout way: The Kendra Saunders version of the character, the third incarnation of Hawkgirl in the comics (and currently part of DC's "Earth-2" reality in the New 52), hasn't been adapted for live action yet. But at least we know now that it means the show could cast a few familiar DC favorites, just with alternate incarnations of the characters.

So now Hawkgirl has joined the CW's fledgling DC universe. Who could be next?
