The new remake of the 1951 classic The Day The Earth Stood Still looks much darker and a lot more armageddon-esque with expansive CGI chaos scenes and military chase sequences. It looks like Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly) is a little late with the phrase "Gort, Klaatu barada nikto," as stadiums crumble and destruction ensues, most likely from silver visor-bot Gort. Click through for the trailer and news on the great Gort debate.
In director Scott Derrickson's (Hellraiser: Inferno) remake, shiny space man Klaatu (Keanu Reeves) visits the Earth on a peace and goodwill mission. Too bad the trigger happy American military shoots him not once, but multiple times, following the motto "Shoot first, ask questions later." The new movie shows Klaatu under interrogation in a secret millitary bunker, and sweet Helen Benson gets signed on to his case. Lot's of classic moments are packed into this trailer. I'm assuming that all of the lights going out in the big cities are Klaatu's demonstration of power (which backfires tremendously). But we only see a brief glimpse of Gort flashing across the screen.
Gort's lack of screen time may be due to the fact that it's rumored that our favorite alien bodyguard is entirely CGI in the film. This stinks — it would have been much more exciting had they decided to work with animatronics, puppets or the old reliable man-in-a-robot suit. What made Gort so scary was that you could tell there was a very scary thing behind his silver shades bumping around inside.
