What does a unicorn look like on the inside? Heirloom, Alison Woodward's lovely pop-up "book" dissects a tiny dead unicorn and suggests that even in death, this creature has a capacity for unexpected beauty.

You should head over to Woodward's blog to watch the book's entire sequence unfold—when the unicorn is taken apart and reassembled, there's a rather beautiful surprise at the end. It transforms the piece from morbid curiosity into a lovely memento mori, one that suggests the world hasn't seen the last of this elegant creature of ink and watercolor.

Woodward also has a second artist's book on the same theme, of a little bird felled by an arrow whose dissected heart holds a small surprise.
