Fox wants the Academy to recognize Serkis' critical work as Caesar in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. They've announced plans to campaign hard to get Serkis nominated for this year's Best Supporting Actor Oscar, which would be the first mo-cap performance to ever do so.

If you're wondering why Fox is pushing Serkis as Best Supporting Actor when Caesar is as much the lead of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes as anybody, The Hollywood Reporter posits that this year's Best Actor category will be quite crowded; besides, it's more likely the often conservative Academy would feel free nominating a motion-capture performance in the less prestigious Best Supporting category.

Fox actually plans to promote all of Dawn's actors, mo-cap and otherwise, for the Best Supporting awards, including Keri Russell and Gary Oldman, but it's getting one of the motion capture actors nominated which would be a major first for the movie industry. If Fox spends enough money — and it seems pretty obvious they will — I'm betting Serkis will get nominated, but I think it'll be several more years before the Academy ever gives a mo-cap performance an Oscar. One step at a time, I guess.
