Well, that was depressing. Has humanity has ever (successfully) acted collectively on something as big as this before?
In the past, industrial byproducts, pollutants and so have been successfully limited, but only where there was an immediate, short term highly visible reason to do so - fluorescent orange run-off and a river full of dead things, a vanishing ozone layer or whatever.
Perhaps offering universal healthcare entailed a similar degree of collective effort?
