First trailer for Beautiful Creatures takes a swing at Twilight's hold on the youth

Trailer FrenzyA special place to find the newest trailers for movies and TV shows you're craving.

The first teaser trailer for the movie adaptation of Beautiful Creatures — an incredibly successful young adult book about Southern accents, teenage romance, and magic — is out. And is it ever full of long vowels and puppy love! Will this be the next Twilight?

Here's the basic premise — the books are set in fictional Gatlin, South Carolina. It follows Ethan Wate, who falls in love with the new girl in school. The new girl can do magic. Oh, and on her sixteenth birthday, her powers will be claimed for light or dark. (Dark is bad.) Here's the official, less magical synopsis:

Based on the first of a five-novel series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, Beautiful Creatures is set in the South and is about two star-crossed teenage lovers: Ethan (Alder Ehrenreich), a local boy, and a mysterious new girl, Lena (Alice Englert), who uncover dark secrets about their respective families, their history and their town.

As a Southern expat, I couldn't get through more than 10 seconds of the trailer. There is nothing more grating on the ears than a fake Southern accent. I imagine it's how English people feel when they watch Game of Thrones and Peter Dinklage talks.
