Even though some of the news from Disney's movie adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods musical bums us out, casting of Meryl Streep as the evil witch gives us hope. And that hope is only magnified in the first ever on set photo of Streep in full witch mode.

Granted, no one will top the amazing and astounding Bernadette Peters from the 1987 Broadway production (and we're not sure why she wasn't cast in this role in the first place) if it has to be anyone else we're good with Meryl. Here's the official picture and synopsis. We recommend reading it while humming the title tune. Because we already are.

Meryl Streep ventures “Into the Woods” as the Witch who wishes to reverse a curse so that her beauty may be restored. The humorous and heartfelt musical, a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, explores the consequences of the quests of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, and the witch who cast a spell on them.

Didn't anyone LISTEN to Mama Mia? Or for that matter Sweeney Todd (Depp)? "Last Midnight" sung by someone who can't sing?

WAIT: There was a stage production with Amy Adams and Donna Murphy and THAT'S not the cast they're going with for the film?

OTOH, I don't know if Chris Pine can sing but I can't wait to hear Captain Kirk say "They taught me to be charming. Not sincere."
