First images from Jim Sturgess and Kirsten Dunst's science fiction romance, Upside Down

We've been eagerly following the science fiction love story Upside Down (starring Jim Sturgess and Kirsten Dunst). The film follows two star-crossed lovers trapped in alternate universes. New images and details are slowly starting to reveal the different dimensions!

French site Into The Screen posted a collection of new images and information on director on Juan Solanas' new project. Intricate sets, dance numbers, gorgeous damsels — already we're starting to see the fingerprints of Production Designer Alex McDowell (Watchmen, Minority Report and Fight Club) and Supervising Art Director, Michelle McGahey (from Dark City and The Matrix).

The French site also had a few new details on the differences between Jim Sturgess' (Adam) and Kirsten Dunst's alternate worlds (roughly translated):

Upside Down is a film produced by a French box, Studio 37, where the filming took place in Montreal, before the cameras of the Argentine director Juan Solanas. The cast is composed of international actors: Kirsten Dunst & Jim Sturgess. As for the story, she falls into a world where different worlds meet. Adam lives in one of these worlds, struggling within a civilization ravaged by war and haunted by memories of a young woman from another world, very close, so close, but denied entry. .. Filming is now complete, but we will have to wait a year post-production before discovering Upside Down on the big screen in 2012.

So it sounds like one world sounds a little bit better than the other (of course that usually remains in the eye of the beholder).

Here's the official synopsis which we've reported earlier this year:

Plot: Look up towards the sky and rub your eyes because you won't believe what you see: cities, forests, and oceans with their own inverted gravity, only an arm's length away, yet completely unreachable. Take a leap over to this alternate reality, two worlds – one above, one below‐ facing each other, and you'll land in the extraordinary world of Upside Down, the new ground‐breaking film of Juan Solanas, the director of the innovative Cannes and César‐prized short film The Man Without A Head and heartbreaking 2005 Cannes film Nordeste.

Adam is a seemingly ordinary guy in a very extraordinary universe. He lives humbly trying to make ends meet, but his romantic spirit holds on to the memory of a girl he met once upon a time from another world, an inverted affluent world with its own gravity, directly above but beyond reach… a girl named Eve. Their childhood flirtation becomes an impossible love. But when he catches a glimpse of grown‐up Eve on television, nothing will get in the way of getting her back… Not even the law or science!

The director Solanas, while relatively unknown, has a small following due to his award-winning short film The Man Without A Head. Which you can watch right here:

Combine that with Solanas' crazy visuals, this seemingly original plotline and our massive crush on Jim Sturgess, and we're pretty excited for a new scifi Romeo and Juliet. Sadly, it no longer sounds like the post-production crew is going to make their original goal of a May 2011 release date, and the French site seems to verify our suspicions that this movie won't be out until sometime in 2012.
