Explosion Over Virginia Was a Russian Rocket

A massive explosion seen over Virginia in the US over the weekend was probably the second stage from a Russian Soyuz rocket, used to boost satellites and supplies up into space for residents of the International Space Station. According to experts, it was probably the second stage of the rocket, jettisoned into the atmosphere after lifting the payload into orbit.

Soyuz rockets also deliver cargo vessels to the ISS, which stay attached to the station until they're filled with garbage and then are jettisoned back into Earth's atmosphere. So just be glad that explosion over Virginia was merely a rocket, and not a huge flaming ball of astronaut poop.
