Want to spend a few semesters analyzing the Marxist subtext of Scream Blacula Scream? This fall, University of Hertfordshire in England will offer an MA in Vampire Literature. They're also holding a conference next weekend: "Open Graves, Open Minds."

From April 16-17, the University of Hertforshire will host "Open Graves, Open Minds: Vampires and the Undead in Modern Culture," a two-day fang-fiesta of panels, papers, and academics waxing wampyrically about bloodsuckers of all stripes. The university will compile the best papers of the conference as a primer for its Vampire Literature MA degree, which will be offered this autumn. Here are some of the better-titled papers being presented at the conference. All are 100% real.

- Bloody hell. Sodding, blimey, shagging, knickers, bollocks. Oh God, I'm English - Translating Spike by Dr. Charlotte Bosseaux (University of Edinburgh).

- The Brutal and Bloody: Representations of the ChupaCabra in Rudolfo Anaya's Curse of the ChupaCabra by Prof. Suryendu Chakraborty (Krishnagar Women's College).

- Fundamentalism, Hybridity and Remapping the Vampire body: Postmodern Vampirism and the Presidency of George W. Bush by Dr. Sorcha Ní Fhlainn (Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland).

- Zombies and Ninjas and Class, Oh My!: Marxist Paradigms in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Julia S. Fullman (California State University, Fullerton, USA)

You can find more information on the conference at the UofH site. The call for papers is sadly closed, so there's no way I can submit my own paper, The Heresthetical Vectors of Don Rickles In Innocent Blood: Mafiosos, Sunshine, And Anne Parillaud In Her Birthday Suit.

[NOTE: I couldn't find any decent "Vampire College Professor" photos, so I just defaulted to Salma Hayek. You're welcome.]

I wonder how much of the class will be filled with people with a genuine interest in Vampire lore versus Twihards just out of high school...
