It's official: Steven Spielberg will direct the movie version of Robopocalypse. Expect big, wide-screen, tentpole robot-revolution action, coming sometime in 2013. And there are the first details on Daniel H. Wilson's next book after Robopocalypse. According to Deadline, Spielberg is officially on board to direct Robopocalypse, with a script by Drew Goddard (Cloverfield, The Cabin in the Woods.) Spielberg was so excited about this project that he started the ball rolling when the novel wasn't even finished — as Wilson was finishing book pages, Goddard was turning them into script pages and the movie was being storyboarded and designed on the go. Now the book is finished — it comes out next June — and Spielberg will start shooting in January 2012. In the meantime, Spielberg is in post-production on his Tin Tin movie, plus War Horse, both of which will be out in December 2011.

The Deadline article also has details on Wilson's next book, AMP, which is set in a future where the technology to empower the disabled "turns them into supermen." (And women, I'm guessing.) That'll be out in the summer of 2012. [Deadline]

Spielberg back on an epic-sounding sci-fi, the Hobbit actually getting made and with Martin Freeman, and Aronofsky directing Wolvie 2? Did I wake up "over there"?
