Well, that’s not something you expect to hear. But yes, DC’s Bombshells — alternate re-imaginings of DC’s cast of female heroes and villains as 1940s pin up sketches that have graced collector shelves as statues and variant comic covers in the past — are teaming up and heading to digital comics.
The female-focused series will be part of DC’s digital first comics initiative, which has already given us the fabulous Wonder Woman ‘77, a continuation of the Lynda Carter TV show, and will be written by Marguerite Bennett, with art from Marguerite Sauvage. Few details have been confirmed as to which Bombshells will star (outside of Supergirl, Batwoman and Wonder Woman gracing the first issue’s cover) or what the story will about, outside of a quote from Bennett herself:
I cannot possibly tell you how excited and grateful I am to be involved in a story this massive and inventive. The series will explore war stories, romances, mysteries, heists, action adventure and horror in a way that only these characters could do — I cannot wait for this book to drop. Pun very much intended.
The first issue of Bombshells will be available digitally in July, with a print release coming August 12th. To celebrate the series heading to print, DC will have a series of Bombshells variant covers across their comics line, including this rather spiffing Black Canary variant for Green Arrow by Ant Lucia:
Please excuse me while I go and have flashbacks to the Birds of Prey song from Batman: The Brave and The Bold and get unreasonably excited about this.
