Although created for the classic animated series Batman Beyond, Terry McGinnis has worked his way into the comic books for the past few years. But it looks like for the first time in the character's history, Terry may be ceding the role as the future Batman, with another character taking on the mantle.
Spoiler Warning: If you've not been keeping up with The New 52: Future's End, there will be spoiler for last week's and this week's issue beyond the next image. You've been warned!
Although Terry was seemingly killed during last week's issue of Future's End in his battle against Brother Eye, you can never be sure with the time-travel stories (or comic books in general, where death is about as regular and as fleeting as a change of clothes) whether it's a permanent change for the character. But in the current — and final — issue, it looks like the role of Batman Beyond has been taken on for good by a familiar face in the Bat Family: former Robin Tim Drake.
Although Batman Beyond as a character has existed for a decade and a half at this point, this would mark the first ever time that someone other than Terry will be in the role on a regular basis, a pretty major shake-up for the character. And considering there'll be a new Batman Beyond ongoing comic beginning in a few months, set in the future of the main DC universe (another first for the character). The preview text seems to make it pretty clear that Tim will be in the role going forward:
At last, Batman Beyond gets his own ongoing series in THE definitive future of the DCU! But this isn't the Beyond you think you know! With the Justice League missing and without Bruce to guide him, this new Batman will need to explore this bizarre world on his own while fighting to raise humanity from an opponent that's already won.
The heroes Batman knew have failed, the world he knew has been turned on its head, and every step he takes will lead him either toward finding home – or further down the road of disaster!
So after many years of animated and comic book service, it looks like Terry McGinnis is no more.
At least until he's eventually brought back, that is. You know how it is.
