Could The Metal Men break the curse of DC's non-Batman superhero films?

A few weeks ago Men in Black director Barry Sonnenfeld teased that he was in talks to make a movie based on a classic 1960s comic. And now we know — Sonnenfeld is making The Metal Men, based on the zany DC Comics property.

Vulture broke the news that Warner Bros. is hot to have Sonnenfeld bring the sixties comic about a team of metal crime-fighters to the big screen. The movie (if it follows the comics) will feature six robots each made out of a different material: gold, iron, lead, mercury and platinum. And their frequently kind of insane creator, Will Magnus. Would you watch a team metal robot movie? Or is the concept too dated and Silver Age to work for today's audiences?

Can anyone, without googling or checking on wikipedia, tell me the following:

1. What is the origin story of the Metal Men?

2. What is the iconic Metal Men story (the "Days of Future Past" or "Phoenix Saga" of the Metal Men to give examples from the X-Men)?

3. What is *A* Metal Men story?
