Well this is exciting: director Claire Denis (I Can’t Sleep) and author Zadie Smith (White Teeth) are teaming up to make a science fiction movie. Keep on eye on this one, it’s going to be fascinating.

All we know about the plot is that it’s a science fiction film, set in space “beyond the solar system, in a future that seems like the present.” The idea comes from Denis and her usual writing partner Jean-Pol Fargeau, but with a script from Denis, Smith, and Nick Laird.

As the AV Club has sussed out, the new film may be based on short Denis made in collaboration with artist Olafur Eliasson. The short is called Contact, and features a score by Stuart Staples (also said to be working on the upcoming film) and was shot by Denis’ cinematographer Agnes Godard and Yorick Le Saux (Only Lovers Left Alive). Here’s the short, which has atmosphere galore:

There are a lot of great names involved here, and there’s even a scientist: French physicist and black hole expert Aurélien Barrau. So we’ve got a director with a lot of vision, a writer with a history of dabbling in genre, a musician, and a physicist. And some kind of plot taking place outside our solar system. Sign us up.

My God. It’s full of ...lines?

That seemed very 2001ish. Hope the movie makes more sense.
