Twenty years after the release of Disney’s animated Mulan, there’s a live-action adaptation currently filming—and a new art exhibit is celebrating the movie’s amazing story.

The exhibit is, appropriately, called “A Tribute Exhibition for Mulan’s 20th Anniversary,” and it’s happening right now at Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra, CA. If you can’t make it there, though, we’ve got a few beautiful pieces from the show to share that represent its huge variety of mediums and styles.

And the live-action Mulan, directed by Niki Caro, is scheduled for release March 27, 2020.

Correction: Honor To Us All is by Anoosha Syed, not Liana Hee.

I don’t know why, but a song from Mulan, not the training montage one, got stuck in my head, but I couldn’t place it. I Googled the lyrics from it, realized it was Mulan, watched it on Youtube. It was Reflections, and it broke me.

See, I’m a transwoman and the past few days have been tough after all of the lovely Trump news. So when this song pops up into my head and the very first line of the song is ‘Look at me, I will never pass for a perfect bride, or a perfect daughter’ I fall apart, and the song only builds more and more from there.

Part of me always kind of knew there was an LGBT overtone to the movie, but I haven’t seen it since it first came out and with listening to the lyrics as an adult, struggling with these same kinds of doubts and fears on a day to day basis, particularly now, it’s a gut punch. I’m not sure why it popped into my head, but it really could not have come at a worse time.
