Illustration for article titled Can you afford to go solar?

Lots of people around the country are outfitting their houses with energy-harvesting solar panels, and not just for the environment, but for government kickbacks, as well. Some companies will even foot the bill and install your panels for free, provided they can collect on the federal subsidies.

So if you're thinking about picking up a solar array for your own home, what do you do? Do you go with the zero dollar option and give up your kickbacks, or self-finance and reap the returns? And how much money can you really save by going solar, anyway?

For help answering all these questions, check out George Musser's article over at Scientific American. Musser has put together a really interesting and informative analysis of "the trials, tribulations and rewards of going solar," and it definitely warrants a read.
