To be fair. The Krampus doesn't just run around beating children.

Naughty children get whipped with a switch once for each time they were naughty, good children get gifts.

In fact the Krampus and Santa used to be in the same stories, ol' st nick would leave the punishment to Krampus. It wasn't until the 1900's that Krampus kind of got left behind and the coal thing started up.
