Between now and when we finally see what happens in Avengers: Infinity War, we’re going to get six new Marvel movies. That sounds pretty great, but we are still curious about what this two-parter on the horizon holds, and its directors love to tease us.
In a new interview, The Russo Brothers—who are currently completing Captain America: Civil War before moving onto Infinity War Parts 1 and 2—dropped a very juicy quote about what may happen in those films, which begin on May 4, 2018.
The stakes of both Civil War and the Avengers: Infinity War movies are gonna be very high, and there will be a price to pay for the characters. And that’s the whole point of cumulative storytelling. We’re going to go on emotional journeys with these characters. We’ve got a lot invested in the emotion. We have a responsibility to be mindful of how these people feel about the characters and, at the same time, we also have a responsibility to carry through on the storytelling. As filmmakers, we believe in stakes. You can’t have good storytelling without strong stakes. So, there will be a price to pay, there will be a price to pay in Civil War. There will be characters who suffer in that movie, and he will come out of that movie and never be the same. And in Infinity War the stakes will be raised to a whole new level. People should expect to be shocked when they see those movies.
That last bit, bolded by us for emphasis, is the really intriguing part. It’s impossible to predict what shocking events could take place in Infinity War, especially with Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man, Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther all happening in between. But you can bet it means death, it means destruction, it does not mean good things for our heroes.
If a little skirmish with Ultron can totally change the make up of The Avengers, who knows what Thanos could do.
