At the New York Times, Farhad Manjoo calls Soylent "the most joyless new technology to hit the world since... MS DOS." Meanwhile, at Ars Technica, Lee Hutchinson has a more subtle take, examining in earnest why so many people are showing interest in the nutritionally complete concoction.

DISCUSSION

I think the problem here is that not all of us feel the need to take pictures of our food and/or make it some big bonding experience.

I prefer bonding experiences that don't involve people talking with their mouths full and would rather have something quick and convenient that gives me all the nutrients and such so that I can dedicate my time to things that I find enjoyable.

Mr. Manjoo is assuming we're all like him. Lots of us have different priorities.

Seriously, sometimes people treat food like a religion. . . and it's almost like Mr. Manjoo, Martha Stewart, and others are attacking this affront to their 'One true GOD'.
