Former io9 boffin Alex Carnevale posts his selections for the top 100 science fiction and fantasy books, and it's a pretty compelling list. What do you think? Does he capture the canon? [This Recording]
THERE ARE SEVEN THINGS WRONG WITH THIS LIST, AND I SHALL NOW TELL YOU WHAT THEY ARE:
NUMBER ONE! THIS LIST DOES NOT INCLUDE A BOOK OR BOOKS THAT SHOULD BE ON IT!
NUMBER TWO! THIS LIST INCLUDES A BOOK OR BOOKS THAT SHOULD NOT BE ON IT!
NUMBER THREE! THIS LIST DOES NOT INCLUDE AN AUTHOR OR AUTHORS THAT SHOULD BE ON IT!
NUMBER FOUR! THIS LIST INCLUDES AN AUTHOR OR AUTHORS THAT NOT SHOULD BE ON IT!
NUMBER FIVE! THIS LIST BILLS ITSELF AS LISTING THE "GREATEST" NOVELS, BUT THE LIST-MAKER'S DEFINITION OF "GREAT" IS UNCLEAR AND CERTAINLY DOES NOT CONFORM TO MY OWN!
NUMBER SIX! THIS LIST INCLUDES BOOKS THAT DO NOT QUALIFY AS SCIENCE FICTION OR FANTASY, THE PARAMETERS OF WHICH ARE WELL ESTABLISHED AND INDISPUTABLE.
NUMBER SEVEN! I AM OUT OF SNACKS.
IN CONCLUSION... THIS LIST IS QUITE DIFFERENT FROM THE LIST I WOULD HAVE MADE, WERE I TO MAKE SUCH A LIST, THE RESULT BEING THAT, INSTEAD OF MERELY LOOKING AT AND AGREEING WITH THINGS, I HAVE BEEN FORCED TO THINK ABOUT THEM, WHICH I RESENT. NO ONE SHOULD BE FORCED TO DO ANYTHING! AT THE SAME TIME, HOWEVER, AYN RAND IS THE WORST.
I LIED ABOUT THE SNACKS, THOUGH. I HAVE PLENTY.
