We’ve written about Kel McDonald’s Cautionary Fables and Fairytales (the comics anthology that retells mythic tales from around the world) before, but now McDonald and a crack new team of artists are back with a whole new edition inspired by Asian folklore, and we’ve got a look at one of the collection’s spookiest new stories!

Cautionary Fables and Fairytales: Asia Edition is the third edition of the anthology, and is currently running a campaign on Kickstarter for funding (the first two covered European and African stories). This new edition features contributions from a whole host of indie comics artists including Carla Speed McNeil, Gene Yang, Nilah Magruder, Nina Matsumoto, Jonathon Dalton and many, many more. The 25- page book includes over 15 different comics, each adapting a legendary fairytale as their own short story.

We’re incredibly excited to share one of them! Read Nina Matsumoto’s “Hoichi the Earless” in its entirety below.

Want to read more? Cautionary Fables and Fairytales’ Kickstarter runs until January 15th, and a pledge of just $5 will net you a digital copy of the new anthology if it reaches its $29,000 goal.
