Pets can be an excellent way to teach kids about responsibility and how to treat living creatures, but not all pets are a great idea for kids. And when the little girl in this cheerfully macabre short film accidentally ends up with murderous piranha instead of a goldfish, things get bloody very quickly.
Jordan Blum directed Fish Friend, "inspired by 1950s Americana, Tim Burton, and the shorts of Pixar."
In the making-of video, the team explains that they originally tried to use a real fish for the piranha Vincent, but the fish's size quickly became an issue. Fortunately, they used a combination of stop-motion and digital animation that gives Fish Friend such a charmingly bespoke feel, one reminiscent of Burton's earlier work.
