Fans of blond cyborg action rejoice โ€” Universal Soldier is back from the dead!

After almost twenty years and five films of variable badassitude, the producers of the original Universal Soldier film are looking to reboot the franchise with help of Stargate and Sanctuary writer Damian Kindler. Will there be more wild-eyed grocery store monologues? Hopefully!

For those of you keeping score at home, the Universal Soldier canonical timeline is absolutely screwball. You have Roland Emmerich's original Universal Soldier, which starred Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren as two all-American dudebros who are turned into Frankenstein killing machines.

This film was followed by the direct-to-VHS Universal Soldier II: Brothers in Arms and Universal Soldier III: Unfinished Business, which were produced as backdoor pilots for Showtime. Neither starred Van Damme, but Gary Busey appeared in the former, Burt Reynolds in the latter.

In 1999 โ€” the same year Unfinished Business came out โ€” Universal Soldier: The Return hit theaters. This flick totally ignored the direct-to-video releases and brought the Muscles from Brussels back into the fold.

Finally, the straight-to-DVD Universal Soldier: Regeneration was released in 2010. This film nixed everything save the first movie and recruited Dolph Lundgren again. There's still no word on how this will affect the next sequel, 2012's 3D extravaganza Universal Soldier: A New Dimension.

In any case, Alf! He's back! In POG form!
