BBC America’s version of Douglas Adams’ Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is the latest entry in what is becoming a genre all its own these days: Know-it-all British men barging into normal people’s lives and dragging them into adventures.

In this show’s case, the man barging in is Dirk Gently (Samuel Barnett), who is investigating a death and kidnapping, and has determined that Todd (Elijah Wood) has no choice but to investigate the crime with him. Also, there’s a corgi for some reason.

Here’s the footage shown at Comic-Con:

And there goes my complete lack of interest...

Even though Stephen Mangan didn’t look anything at all like how I pictured the character (I always figured he looked exactly like Duggan from City of Death) he at least managed to capture the core essence of what makes Dirk tick... in that he was an unscrupulous amoral con man who only solved cases thorough blind luck/the whims of the universe, and would much rather just bilk money from gullible old ladies to buy a new refrigerator or fly to the Bahamas.

Oh well, at least this frees up Stephen to be the 13th Doctor in another couple of years. (He’s already said he wants the role, and he’s got Tom Baker’s hair)
