Summer is coming, which means one thing: it’s almost shark-movie season! In The Shallows, a great white that has no business being so close to shore menaces an extremely unlucky surfer (Blake Lively) who’s been stranded on a rock tantalizingly close to the (deserted) beach.
Here’s the official synopsis from Sony:
In the taut thriller The Shallows, Nancy (Blake Lively) is surfing alone on a secluded beach when she is attacked by a great white shark and stranded just a short distance from shore. Though she is only 200 yards from her survival, getting there proves the ultimate contest of wills. It’s Jaws for a new generation.
Hmm. Anyone else kinda rooting for the shark in this scenario?
Truth be told, based on this teaser trailer, The Shallows looks way more Open Water than Jaws—wonder if there’ll be much more to the movie than Lively plotting survival strategies from that lonely rock? (Imdb only lists a total of three actors in the cast.) In the movie’s favor: director Jaume Collet-Serra’s previous films include Orphan and Non-Stop, so he has both horror and cheesy action chops to bring to the table.
