As much as we enjoy poking through modern ruins and imagining how the world might look after we're gone, there's much more to celebrate when people rebuild after disaster strikes. These photos show how the people of Sarajevo did just that, reconstructing their city after the ravages of war.

Photographer Jim Marshall took these photos for his series 15 Years, demonstrating Sarajevo's post-war reconstruction. He took the initial series in 1996, after the end of the Siege of Sarajevo, and then took the second series in 2011, photographing the same subjects from the exact same spots. In that time, the city didn't just get new buildings, the old ones were repaired, standing as more than mere monuments to their former selves.
