Nick Fury will be getting an awesome new female sidekick in The Avengers, according to Samuel L. Jackson. But who? And what cool female character from Avengers lore could director Joss Whedon be drawing on?

The trades have started leaking the names of auditioning actresses, including Morena Baccarin! We pooled the clues from the rumored list of brunette actresses auditioning and from Jackson's hints and came up with this list of possible new Avengers.

In this video Jackson casually remarks on The Jimmy Fallon Show that he was just about to go and screen test a group of actresses, for some sort of Nick Fury "sidekick" part. He also reveals that Fury will be making yet another cameo in both Thor and Captain America movies, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

But who is this assistant that Jackson speaks of? THR is now reporting that the mysterious actresses vying for the next available Marvel part are Morena Baccarin (Serenity, V), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World), Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) and Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield). We'll be shocked if Baccarin doesn't get the part. She's got a leg-up on all the other actresses, since she's already worked with The Avengers director Joss Whedon. But that is all still yet to come, right now we're interested in which character they could be playing. Here are our guesses:

Janet Van Dyne
Janet Van Dyne (Wasp) has to be in the Marvel movies at some point. Why not now? She's a founding member of The Avengers and the love interest (and eventual wife) to Ant-Man, a movie Paramount and Marvel have already assigned Edgar Wright to make. This character needs to be introduced to the already male-heavy cast ASAP. Plus, whoever snags the mysterious character would reportedly have a nine-picture option with Paramount. We can not imagine that Paramount would bother with such an extensive contract if the character wasn't important. If you think about all the possible future films, the Wasp would be the easiest to slip into each movie. And out of all the side characters that could fit into this part, Wasp would get the most mainstream love.

Sharon Carter
Carter (Agent 13) is an important member of S.H.I.E.L.D., and a major Captain America supporting character She's the niece of Peggy Carter, Captain America's love interest who's played by Hayley Atwell in Captain America: The First Avenger. So there's an easy way to introduce her once they wake Steve Rogers up from his icy slumber. Plus Sharon and Captain America do end up together a few times throughout the comics. Then again, she's a blonde, and all of the actresses rumored to be auditioning are brunettes.

Maria Hill
We really want Maria Hill to appear in the Marvel movies. She's a bad ass S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, who eventually winds up running the whole operation after Nick Fury leaves. And if the character truly is a "sidekick" as Jackson described, this is a good way to introduce an important member of the team who slowly grows over the course of the films. Plus, Baccarin wouldn't even have to change her hair!

Carol Danvers
A shot-in-the-dark but there's seven more alleged Marvel movies to be made. At some point they are going to have to introduce new superheroes. It would be a lot of fun to have Ms. Marvel waiting in the background, never fully revealing her powers until the second Avengers film.

What do you think?
