Paul Bettany will convert you to the worship of smouldering crucifix-faced angst, vampire-hunting explosions and six-pack abs, judging from the latest trailer for next summer's Priest. If you played a spot-the-cliche drinking game on this trailer, you'd pass out. Spoilers!
Despite the copious amounts of silliness and the I Am Legend vampires, it must be said that there's some nice imagery in this trailer.
So in the dark post-apocalyptic future, the priests are the only ones who can protect us from the vampires — but they think the centuries-long war against the vampires is over... all except for Paul Bettany's main character, who decides to go rogue in classic hero fashion. I love how in the part of the trailer where the voice-over says "You will be stripped," we see Bettany taking his shirt off. Based on the graphic novel series by Min-Woo Huang, the film reunites Bettany with his Legion director Scott Charles Stewart... and we all remember how well that turned out.
Here's the official synopsis:
[Priest], a post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller, is set in an alternate world — one ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampires. The story revolves around a legendary Warrior Priest (Paul Bettany) from the last Vampire War who now lives in obscurity among the other downtrodden human inhabitants in walled-in dystopian cities ruled by the Church. When his niece (Lily Collins) is abducted by a murderous pack of vampires, Priest breaks his sacred vows to venture out on a quest to find her before they turn her into one of them. He is joined on his crusade by his niece's boyfriend (Cam Gigandet), a trigger-fingered young wasteland sheriff, and a former Warrior Priestess (Maggie Q) who possesses otherworldly fighting skills.
The film also co-stars Karl Urban, Stephen Moyer and Christopher Plummer.
