What happens when you go from being one of the most prominent Jedi masters in the galaxy to an old man hiding out in the desert? Well, for one thing, your hair gets really long.

There’s a great story waiting to be told about what Anakin Skywalker’s mentor did after cutting down his protege on Mustafar. Rumors about Obi-Wan-focused movies have popped up now and again and Marvel’s latest Star Wars comics have dabbled a little bit in showing Ben Kenobi’s life on Tatooine. But a new fan-created trailer makes a great case for a standalone on-screen saga.

According to Slashfilm, filmmaker Rich Williamson cut together the Kenobi trailer from Last Days in the Desert, in which Ewan McGregor played Jesus. Like the recent Marvel Comics stories, the teaser hints that Obi-Wan has been secretly watching over Luke Skywalker, with a little help from Qui-Gon Jin’s Force ghost. It makes sense that Obi-Wan would feel some amount of shame and disgrace after the Jedi get wiped out and that he’d struggle with the idea of getting involved in another Skywalker’s life. All we’ve got is a great trailer, for now.

I feel obligated to point out that John Jackson Miller’s novel, Kenobi, covers this ground most excellently. It’s the story of how Obi-Wan struggles with his guilt over Anakin, his concern that he might be the last Jedi, his anxiety about training another Skywalker, all while trying to keep a low profile and not get involved in a conflict between farmers and Tusken Raiders. It’s very much worth your time.
