The First Fantastic Beasts Featurette Reveals A New Side To the World of Harry Potter

J.K. Rowling’s latest story in the world of Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, won’t open for 11 months. But this weekend, an almost three minute sneak peek at the film was released and it’s going to give you chills.

The video was released at a special Harry Potter event in Orlando, Florida and explains how Rowling’s latest story will be set in Potter’s world, but introduce us to a bunch of new characters several decades earlier - in 1920s America.

Veteran Harry Potter director David Yates is helming Fantastic Beasts with a screenplay by Rowling herself. Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne plays Newt Scamander, a British magizoologist who travels to New York with a case full of magical creatures. But when that case opens, chaos ensues.

Redmayne is joined by “Katherine Waterston (Steve Jobs, Inherent Vice) as Tina; Tony Award winner Dan Fogler (Fanboys) as Jacob; Alison Sudol (Dig, Transparent) as Tina’s sister, Queenie; Ezra Miller (Trainwreck) as Credence; two-time Oscar nominee Samantha Morton (In America, Sweet and Lowdown) as Mary Lou; Oscar winner Jon Voight (Coming Home, Ray Donovan) as Henry Shaw, Sr.; Ron Perlman (Hellboy) as Gnarlack; Carmen Ejogo (Selma) as Seraphina; Jenn Murray (Brooklyn) as Chastity; young newcomer Faith Wood-Blagrove as Modesty; and Colin Farrell (True Detective) as Percival Graves.”

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens November 18.

Considering the nature of the book as basically a modern-day bestiary (complete with marginalia, as any good medieval-inspired text should be), I feel like this should be a fun magical riff on Steve Irwin more than anything else.
