The film, starring Scarlett Johansson, is slated to be released on March 31, 2017, and is an adaptation of the Japanese anime, which follows members of Public Security Section 9 in the middle of the 21st Century. The cyberpunk anime first appeared as an manga in 1989, and later became an animated film in 1995, while another animated film came out earlier this year in Japan. An animated television show appeared in 2002, with several sequels over the years.

A live-action film has been in the works since 2008, when it was originally acquired by Dreamworks pictures.

DISCUSSION

Well, at least this sounds like a better idea than live-action Akira. Leaving aside the the usual malaise about remakes, this project is an interesting choice for Scarlet Johansson. She has made semi-human characters something of a specialty in things like Under the Skin, Her, and even nonsense like Lucy or The Island. She chooses roles that let her trade in on the artifice and uncanniness of her movie-star looks.

I’m still not sure why they’re making the movie, but she’s a shrewd pick for the lead.
