Sometimes, horror movies and action-thrillers are filmed in long-abandoned buildings; sometimes new sets are built for the movies and then abandoned after they wrap. Either way, when the cameras stop rolling, these places remain spooky all on their own.

There are other abandoned movie sets that are particularly interesting, such as the set for The Abyss, which was filmed at the never-completed Cherokee Nuclear Plant and the sets for The Phantom Menace, which has actually been reclaimed as housing.

Session 9 (2001)

Session 9 was set in a real abandoned psychiatric hospital, Danvers State Hospital in Danvers, Massachusetts. It was also filmed on location, in a part of the building that was deemed safe for shooting.

The building was actually demolished in 2007 after the property was purchased by Avalon Bay Development, but not before its halls were photographed by urban explorers. Click through the gallery to see what the hospital buildings looked like before demolition:

The Hills Have Eyes (2006)

If you happen to find yourself driving down the highway near Ouarzazate, Morocco, you might spot a very spooky looking gas station along the side of the road. It's not a real gas station; it's the Gas Haven set from the 2006 remake of The Hills Have Eyes, and it still looks like a place you might encounter homicidal mutants:

28 Weeks Later (2007)

The London Underground's Aldwych tube station served as a movie set even before it finally closed down in 1994. It appeared in the 1972 horror film Death Line, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, Patriot Games, V for Vendetta, and, most recently, Sherlock. If you've seen the sequel to 28 Days Later, it's also where Tammy and Andy Harris hide out.

Deadgirl (2008)

This zombie movie is another horror flick filmed inside a real abandoned hospital, Linda Vista Community Hospital. Appropriately, there are stories of hauntings attached to the hospital, and it's actually seen more than one zombie movie. It also appears in Zombie Strippers, as well as in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, True Blood, and Dexter. It's just a ready-made horror set.

Jurassic World (2015)

The upcoming Jurassic Park movie isn't horror, but it still aims to be scary, and it's got a set to match. This time, dinosaurs will be running through Six Flags New Orleans, which has been closed since Hurricane Katrina.

It's plenty eerie without the Velociraptor pack:

Mr. Bonestripper

Danvers wasn't completely demolished. The outbuildings, as well as both wings of the massive Kirkbride building were torn down. The central administration building, the "body" of the bat-shaped structure, was gutted, and the remains are now, if I recall, luxury condos.
