Nature just announced that it's making its articles available to be freely shared. It's part of a new program that lets subscribers share the full text of research papers, dating all the way back to 1869, through a read-only link that, while it can't be downloaded or printed, can be saved with annotations.
It still upsets me to no end how insane this entire system is.
The [government/community/all sane humans] should fully and enthusiastically support education and research, and the results of all research should be available to everyone for free, period.
What we're doing here? This is just freakin' madness. It's inefficient, it's wasteful, it slows down science and discovery and it excludes the vast majority of thinking minds from work that other people put their hearts into generating.
