Just in time for the buzz for his second movie to truly begin, Marvel Comics is giving Iron Man a makeover - multiple makeovers, in fact, as various artists redesign the character across the entire Marvel line.


Marvel's "Iron Man By Design" variant covers, running on various issues of Marvel comics throughout April, see the publisher's favorite movie icon getting reinterpreted by many artists in many styles. Here are some examples of what to expect:

Marvel's SVP of sales, David Gabriel, explains the thinking behind the branding:

We're excited to show fans a whole new side of Iron Man... Taking our inspiration from some of the most exciting eras, art styles, inventions - you name it! - in history, the IRON MAN BY DESIGN variant covers are just the beginning of the exciting Iron Man product hitting stores throughout the year!


In other words, this is just the beginning of an Iron deluge... but at least it's a pretty one.

Why is everyone surprise and angered by this? They did the exact same thing with Wolverine last summer, and I don't remember any complaining. It's a marketing ploy, sure, but a good one. Better than inciting people to rip off the covers of some comics from the Distinguished Competition.

I wish DC do this kind of cover pimping with Batman when his next movie comes out. You can never have enough Batman covers.
