The Original Dungeons & Dragons Art Is Satanically Hilarious

The artwork from this 1974 edition of D&D is eye-gougingly bad, but it harkens you back to an era when 20-sided die made kids worship Lucifer and life was all about playing hooky to go to the REO Speedwagon-Styx show.

Zack Parsons and Steve "Malak" Sumner from Something Awful's WTF, D&D!? column have exhumed an original Dungeons and Dragons manual, and it isn't pretty. Check out their caustically funny breakdown and remember that illustrations like these spurred epically stupid moral panics.

I followed the link to the "Chick" website and read the pamphlets urging kids to stay away from D&D because it preps you for a life of witchcraft and suicide. Or something. The scary thing is, they still seem to be printing and selling these godawful pamphlets.

If I can summon a 20th level red dragon from actual rituals in the D&D books, then what the hell am I doing here talking to you losers? See ya!

(Last part tongue in cheek. Don't know how high the irony appreciation level is on io9; thinking it's higher than on ew.com.)
