Just days after announcing plans for Amazing Spider-Man 3 and 4 , Sony has also decided that Amazing Spider-Man 2 doesn't need to feature Peter Parker's future wife, Mary Jane Watson. Spider-man's red-headed love interest has been cut out the sequel.
The new Mary Jane (played by Shailene Woodley) was spotted filming Spider-Man 2 back in February. But THR is reporting that director Marc Webb has cut her (small) part out of the film entirely. Webb explained his reasoning with this comment:
“I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship. Shailene is an incredibly talented actress and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her.”
Instead the Watson character will be introduced in the third film, and the part could be recast. But weep not for Woodley, because she's currently filming Divergent as the main character Tris. [THR]
